Media: Sculpture — Constructing
The art of the everyday
Constructions are original works built from everyday materials, so they often seem both entirely innovative and vaguely familiar. A sense of history is literally built into constructions that incorporate found objects or materials, such as boat rudders, or dollhouse frames, or stair railings. Some sculptors build constructions that bridge the worlds of art and industry by incorporating parts from cars, factory machines, and computers. They may choose to weld, glue, bolt, or nail together their constructions, depending on the materials and the scale of the work.

Construction is hard work
Jeremy Anderson
This demanding work requires visual and technical versatility, and occasionally arcane expertise to boot. Who besides an artist would ever need to know exactly which method is appropriate to join dowl rods and a bicycle chain to a chair back covered in tire rubber? And who else but a gifted artist could use mundane materials to create a freestanding statue with such striking visual appeal?
