Mix it up
Any single painting medium offers a vast range of visual effects
but mixing media can result in a uniquely textured, vibrantly varied
work. Mixed media artists might combine various paints, collage, pencil
sketches, printmaking, and photography. Some artists even embed found
objects such as toy parts or hardware into the surface of a mixed media
work blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture in
the process. Sometimes the artist chooses to make all the different
elements that make up a mixed media piece plainly visible; but then
again, the artist might blend several media into a seamlessly
integrated whole. The possibilities are literally endless but
the goal in all cases is to create the unique combination of image,
surface, texture, and color that perfectly conveys the artist's
intent.
Here is a particularly complex example of a mixed media work by
NextMonet artist Don Farnsworth, which combines papermaking,
printmaking, drawing, and painting.
