Encaustic: Hot stuff
Encaustic is an ancient Greek method of painting with pigment mixed with
resin and hot wax. The heat from the wax fuses these ingredients
together and onto a support. The artist can use very thick, heavy brush
strokes with encaustic, without worrying that the paint will flake or
crumble away from the support. Since wax is semitransparent, encaustic
adds depth and luminosity to an artwork.
