Technically speaking, acrylic paint is pigment in a mixture of acrylic resin and mineral spirits. Acrylics are different than oils, because they are quick-drying and usually opaque rather than transparent. Some artists add a gel medium to acrylic paint, to make it more transparent or add texture. Acrylic paint is especially long-lasting — when dry, acrylics are impervious to water and most other solvents. Painters also favor acrylics for their relatively low toxicity, and the fact that brushes and clothes with acrylic paint on them can be cleaned with water instead of solvents (as long as the paint is still wet).
